Abstract

Since its beginnings, the media have played a fundamental role in the way we see and understand the outside world, solving, mediating and questioning problems, ensuring and promoting democratic and healthier societies. However, from the end of the 20th century, with the adoption of a populist and sensationalist model, the media gradually lost its status as fourth power in favor of an entertainment industry focused on spectacularizing news in a blind search for profit. This essay aims to reflect on the current media landscape, new challenges and solutions that can guarantee a more transparent, impartial and democratic model. With the massification of the Internet and the rise of network societies, the media now have the opportunity to restructure their business model, improving their public service, once again gaining the credibility and trust that should be attributed to them. However, reality is more complex than it may seem, revealing that the current model is still far from overcoming the challenges that contemporary times impose on it.
